Vitamins are a group of biochemical substances essential for the body that regulate functions such as vision, blood coagulation or bone formation.

There are 13 vitamins that are normally classified by their solubility: water-soluble (soluble in water) and liposoluble (soluble in oils, fats, ether, chloroform and acetone):
Water-soluble vitamins (9): Vitamin C and complex B:
- C (Ascorbic acid).
- B1 (Thiamin). Also called «antineuritic vitamin».
- B2 (Riboflavin).
- B3 (Niacin). Also called "nicotinic acid", "vitamin PP" or "antipelagra".
- B5 (Pantothenic acid).
- B6 (Pyridoxine).
- B8 (Biotin). Also known as «vitamin H».
- B9 (Folic acid). Also named as "folates".
- B12 (cyanocobalamin).
Fat-soluble vitamins (4):
- A (Retinol). Also called «antineuritic vitamin».
- D (Calciferol). Also known as «anirrachitic vitamin».
- E (Alpha-tocopherol). Also named as «anti-sterile vitamin».
- K (Menaquinone). Also called "menadinone" or "antihaemorrhagic vitamin".
